Inspired by a book and film series from my childhood, UNDERRATED focuses on characters who were overlooked, underestimated, or quietly essential. The series reframes them through emotion rather than narrative, giving weight to what was always present but underappreciated.
The works shown below are original digital studies drawn by Mooney on an iPad as part of the design process.
These studies explore composition, scale, and colour ahead of committing to canvas. They are preparatory works for the next series, UNDERRATED, which will follow the current HANGMAN series.
Final works for this series will be painted in acrylic on 100 x 120 cm canvases and will appear in the completed works section once resolved.

Mooney is an anonymous British artist working with word-based compositions on canvas.
Each piece starts with a single word, chosen for its weight as much as its meaning. It is placed at the centre and treated first as form. What gathers around it reflects the forces that shape every decision we make.
The surface is built slowly, through layered movement and restraint. Marks are deliberate. Nothing is illustrative. Any tension is held, not resolved.
There is no written signature. A cross marks the point of origin. Within each work, a small pencil-drawn figure sits quietly, present but not announced. It remains as a constant across the series.
Every artwork is a one of one original. No prints. No repeats.
The artist remains anonymous by choice. This body of work is ongoing.

You may register interest in completed works, works in progress, commissions, or collaborations.
Commissions and collaborations are considered selectively.
A maximum of two commissions will be accepted per calendar year. If selected and an agreement is reached, you will be placed on a waiting list for the next available year.
